Oppression in Africa and Elsewhere

It is already illegal to be gay in Uganda. Now, Uganda’s government is about to pass a bill that will bring the death penalty for many convicted of gay crimes. This is just atrocious. There’s a petition available that I would encourage all of you to sign to tell Uganda’s government what the world thinks about their oppression of their LGBT community. Please sign it.

A 13 year old girl was recently raped in South Africa to try to “correct” her sexual orientation. This isn’t a rare occurrence there, with 10 lesbians a week being raped or gang raped each week in Cape Town alone.

Not too long ago a young Syrian lesbian was threatened with rape by some security forces, her father stood up for her and they backed down. Her hero saved her from being raped by the cops.

Update 06/12/11 – This story was a hoax.

Gays and Lesbians can’t change who they’re attracted to any more than anyone else can. Making it a crime does nothing but drive them underground and force some to live a lie to stay under the radar. To make it a crime for someone to want happiness and intimacy is atrocious. This oppression found in many of the backwards parts of the world must stop.

What’s even more mind boggling is the concept of “corrective rape.” Men raping a lesbian to turn her straight. How the hell is that going to work? Raping a woman who isn’t attracted to men won’t make her straight, it will justifiably make her hate men. This the most illogical and asinine idea ever.

Why can’t we all just let everyone live their lives in peace, free to find the happiness they deserve?
